ANZAC

ANZAC Monument, 2010

186 × 154 cm

A memorial built in the 1960’s close to the border with the Gaza Strip in commemoration of ANZAC, the Australian and New Zealander Army Corps that fought alongside the British in World War I. Roughly 1000 soldiers on horseback armed with bayonets set out from that spot to liberate the city of Beer Sheva from Ottoman occupation – the last recorded military campaign fought on horseback. On top of the A-shaped monument (which stands for ANZAC), the observation tower can be seen draped by a modern camouflage net that was recently left there by some military unit.
